Ryan Bamford turned excited three years ago when Greg Carvel called him to accept an offer to teach the University of Massachusetts men’s hockey team. Bamford, who had turned out to be the school’s athletics director a year in advance, had identified Carvel as the ideal candidate to reinvigorate an application that became perennially a few of the worst in Division 1.

“He said, ‘The first component you have to do is name Cale Makar,'” Carvel said.
