Mirabai Chanu is a weightlifter from Manipur, India. Mirabai Chanu has risen to prominence within the sport and is one of the highest ranked female weightlifters in the world. Just 2 years after starting weightlifting, she won her first international medal at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow where she won a silver in the women’s 48 kg category . Currently, Mirabai Chanu is the third ranked woman weightlifter in the world, according to the International Weightlifting Federation.
It is a blessing for India that Manipur produces such world-class lifters like Sanjita. She has been able to produce more than one medal in the Olympics, and she deserves all the credit. The country’s best shuttler, Saina Nehwal, had also expressed her disappointment over the notification.
“I am very disappointed by the notification because it has made our life difficult,” she told NDTV.
The notification was issued on the same day as Ms. Nehwal took part in a Commonwealth Games ceremony to inaugurate Delhi’s new ‘Netaji Indoor Stadium’, named after India’s independence fighter. A country cannot progress if its national players are neglected in this manner. It is not about the government alone, but everyone needs to come together and give it their best shot.
The Manipuri weightlifter took to Twitter to share her joy after winning the silver medal in the women’s 69kg event at the 2018 Commonwealth Games. “I couldn’t control my emotions, so I just screamed and gave myself a hug.
