New Delhi: Vinesh Phogat gets to check herself in her new 53kg class when she competes in the senior Asian Wrestling Championship and Bajrang Punia and Sakshi Malik as India Sunday named a 30-member squad for the occasion, to be held in China subsequent month.
The Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) carried out trials for ladies in Lucknow on Saturday and in Sonepat on Sunday. Bajrang, who competes in the 65kg category, won gold in the UWW Dan Kolov-Nikola Petrov event in Bulgaria. Vinesh competed inside the 53kg category for the first time and settled for silver.
The Rio Olympic bronze medallist Sakshi also won a silver, but in the 65kg class, while Pooja Dhanda won gold in 59kg. At the Asian championship, scheduled for April 23 to 28, Sakshi will return to her original 62kg class, and Navjot Kaur will represent India in 65kg.
Asian Games bronze medallist Divya Kakran will return to aggressive wrestling after recovering from an ankle injury. She will compete in the 68kg category. National champion Amit Dhankar booked a berth in the 74kg category simultaneously, and Maharashtra wrestler Rahul Aware made a comeback to the Indian crew by prevailing the paths in 61kg.
